The Goldendoodle is a “designer dog,” a hybrid dog breed resulting from breeding a Poodle with a Golden Retriever. By definition, a Goldendoodle is a crossbreed —a cross that is enjoying growing popularity. The Golden Retriever and Poodle are crossed with the goal of acquiring desired traits from each breed. Like both of the parent breeds, the Goldendoodle is intelligent, friendly, and at least moderately active. Both of the breeds used to create Goldendoodles are known to be smart and quick learners. If socialization and training are introduced early and positive reinforcement techniques are used such as praise, play, and food rewards, you will be met with a wonderful companion. Goldendoodles have been moderately used as guide dogs, therapy dogs, diabetic dogs, search dogs and rescue dogs They have inherited the Poodle's intelligence and the Golden Retriever's ease of training. Goldendoodles have also become increasingly used as domestic pets due to their affection towards families, as well as their friendliness and patience with children. One of our puppies from a previous litter is currently a diabetic alert dog for a young boy who has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. His story can be found on Facebook. The page is called "The Fight for Nathan". https://www.facebook.com/groups/608370812634915/
With knowledgeable breeding, Goldendoodles are very healthy dogs. If health testing is performed by breeders on their breeding stock, it is possible to avoid certain disorders that may be associated with the Poodle or the Golden Retriever such as hip dysplasia. As a responsible breeder, we have OFA exams performed on our breeding stock by licensed veterinarians to make sure they are fit for reproducing. We also have the DNA of our breeding stock examined in labs to ensure our dogs are not carriers of genetic disorders that are associated with Poodles and Golden Retrievers such as Von Willebrands disease (vWD), a bleeding disorder. When the correct breeding stock is selected, hypoallergenic low/non-shedding puppies can be produced. These puppies are a wonderful addition to a family whose members may have allergy issues. My family doesn't have allergy issues, but we really appreciate not having to clean up dog hair :)
